Whole New Religion

a novel by Bob Jakubovic
ISBN: 0-9720287-0-6
List Price: $14.00 Web Special: $9.75

Cult writer and famous recluse Felix Sladkey has just mailed off the final scrap of writing that will conclude his latest masterpiece—the one which thousands of fans have been awaiting for years.

Through an intricate system designed to keep Sladkey’s whereabouts secret, the scrap eventually reaches Aaron the typist. Knowing Sladkey will not protest out of fear of giving up his reclusion, Aaron concludes the novel on his own, thus setting the stage for a cast of characters that include:

  • Vlad the Russian bartender, whose reading of Cindy and Her Best Friend’s Dad (the porn classic written by Sladkey’s alter ego, Tom Smith) sends him to a tragic end and sends Father Kurtz of Our Sorrowful Lady of Saint Peter In Chains to confess to Smith;
  • Agent Antonio Ficino (aka Anthony Fisher), who hires a hack writer to pose as Sladkey on a national tour that will make a rock star out of both of them;
  • Owen Pepper, Aaron’s neighbor who holds a bag of Sladkey scraps for ransom;
  • and private dick Hugh Langston, in whose hands the fate of all future Sladkey novels resides.

With Whole New Religion, Jakubovic takes aim at the literary industry with a novel that is as playful as it is deadpan, and as stylistically familiar as it is without parallel.

Bob Jakubovic lives in Ohio and is currently working on his dissertation at the University of Cincinnati. Whole New Religion is his first novel.

"Whole New Religion” is a great book — serious, entertaining, quick-paced and intelligent...Jakubovic has a mordant wit and a dark sense of humor that reverberates with the sounds of the clanging steel foundries of his native turf. A close comparison might be made between Jakubovic’s style and that of Kurt Vonnegut, but for my money, the younger writer has a funnier, more deadpan sense of humor and a rougher attitude... An even closer comparison is to the writing of Chuck Palahniuk, whose Fight Club has the same breakneck pace and black humor..."
